The period 1750 to 1900 saw a huge transformation in all aspects of society. Beginning in Great Britain, the manufacturing process shifted from hand production to factory production. Newly-invented machines, utilising steam power for the first time, caused the number of goods being produced to grow exponentially. Rather than goods having to be created slowly and by hand, factory systems yielded more and more products, creating everything from pairs of shoes to machine guns. This new system not only impacted economies, but political structures and social norms.
The 19th century brought factories that could mass-produce products with machines and workers assigned to different tasks. This sparked the Industrial Revolution. Britain was the first nation to be industrialized. They built factories and made money from them and built more factories making the nation industrialized. Before the Industrial Revolution began people would manufacture goods in their own houses, with the employers supplying the materials needed and much of the work had to be done by hand. However, during the Industrial Revolution, many advancements were made in several areas of work, which meant machines now did the majority of the labour. Although many wonderful inventions were made, poor people’s lives became harder and the work became very dangerous. Beginning in 1700 and continuing on till 1850, the Industrial Revolution brought both joys and sorrows to the people of Britain.
This period soon became called the Industrial Revolution. The new techniques created happened because the new efficiency of production gave Great Britain the sweet taste of power. The resources and wealth obtained put Britain in a strong position to conquer other countries. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, and parts of Africa soon became British territories. With these new territories, Britain could obtain even more wealth and power.
Great Britain was the first country to experience industrialization, due to its abundant natural resources such as coal and iron, immense expansion throughout the world and subsequent economic growth from trade, and its governmental and financial strength. The industrial revolution was rapid and maintained strength in Great Britain, whereas other Western countries experienced industrialization gradually and with difficulty, due to political, social, and economic instability. A major factor in Great Britain’s early industrialization was its natural resources. The abundance of coal and iron is an example of these resource.
