45 years gone, still in our hearts Believe it or not, but it’s been 45 years of Janis Joplin gone. She has been gone for quite a while, but she still hasn’t left our hearts. Article by: Maha Salman Janis Lyn Joplin, a famous musician, born to Seth Joplin and Dorothy Joplin as their first child on January 19th 1943 in Port- Arthur, Texas. As she grew older, she became a big sister at the age of 6, to a small baby sister, Laura Joplin, then four years later came a baby brother, Michael Joplin. Janis was a fairly good student and was having a great time in school until the age of 14, as she grew into an overweight teen, she had lost many friends. By the late 1950’s Janis would often choose to wear clothes that weren’t in the “popular” girls’ fashion, such as boys’ shirts with tights, or short skirts, etc. which leaded to her getting bullied in school, at one point she was even called a pig! As she was growing up to young teenager, she would listen to Blues Musicians, such as Bessie Smith, Ma Rainy, and Odetta. Janis Joplin had had a good career, a solo one, and one with a band, Big Brother and the Holding Company. Janis Joplin was an average student in her schools. First she went to Thomas Jefferson High School, and that is where she got bullied because of how she dressed and because she was an overweight teenager. Since she didn’t have many female friends, she made a group of guy friends who had the same interest as Janis like in music. When she graduated from High School, she joined the Lamar State College of Technology. When she started studying there, she would spend most of her time with her friends hanging out and drinking, and so after 1 semester of college, she dropped
