Parent-teen relationships influence your academics, your actions, and the choices you make. As one can tell Sharon M. Draper’s novel focuses on relationships and depression. After all, if Andy had a relationship with his parents he probably wouldn’t have committed suicide. As a result, Andy suffered as well as, his parents when he died. They faced the consequences of not having a relationship with Andy.

According to “Teen Suicide Statistics,” suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15-24-year-olds. With this in mind, Building Life and the Suicide Awareness Voices of Education made the “Empty Seat” PSA, in an attempt to combat not only suicide, but to focus on suicide among teens. To reach this point, a literal and symbolic approach to purpose, the use of a general, yet specified audience, effective appeals to ethos and logos, and a fundamental appeal to pathos were used in the “Empty Seat” PSA. Though the purpose of this PSA is quite obvious, simple aspects of it are used to emphasize its importance, and catch the viewer’s attention.
This enforced optimistic ideology manipulates her children’s perceptions of their lives which takes any accountability for their misfortunes away from her. She chooses to neglect her children but enlightens it to be a generous gesture because “suffering when you’re young is good for you… It immunized your body and soul” (28). She influences her children to be accepting of their misfortunes so she may restrict the necessity of providing care for her children. The children are used to being deprived of simple needs such as food and health care so they do not mention to their parents when their difficulties have increased.
The relationship between a parent and child is incredibly important and can have a significant impact on a child’s overall development. It is often the most influential and important relationship a child will have in their lifetime, as the bond between a parent and child can shape the child’s world. In Chang-Rae Lee’s novel A Gesture Life, conflicts can damage this vital parent-child bond and have a detrimental effect on the child’s overall well-being and sense of identity.
ANALYSIS As mentioned beforehand, deception damages a child’s self-esteem. This situation often happens in a dysfunctional family. With no clear distinction between good and bad parenting, it is usually left to personal preferences and judgements to decide which parents have adequately raised their children and which have failed. When a parent so call “fails,” often it is the children with their strong will and determination to survive that collectively raise themselves. In Jesmyn Ward’s Sing, Unburied, Sing, Leonie, one of the narrators and the mother of another narrator, Jojo, is not the most caring, hands-on mother, but is loving of her children nevertheless.

Furthermore, the stage of development, while the abuse occurs will influence the type and severity of the consequences. Additionally, the more chronic and long lasting the abuse and neglect, the more harmful it is. The short documentary “Child of Rage” presents an example of how experiencing abuse as a child can shape the child later in life and how some children can recover. The intrafamilial abuse that Beth experienced as a one year old affected her behavior later in her childhood when she was adopted. Beth was also able to recover from some of the effects of the child abuse she experienced once she was separated from her adoptive family and taken to a special home. Beth experienced intrafamilial abuse at the hands of her biological father after her mother passed away when she was one.
For instance, for this student, before reading this book, I would categorize this different types of abuse differently, from more severe to less severe, and perhaps giving less importance to those I viewed as less severe. But it is important to understand that for each of these victims, each abuse was very serious, very severe, and they should be treated equally. This book is also a great source of understanding for those who were perpetrators of abuse, especially against children, it will help them to understand the consequences of their actions, and how perhaps once act, have completely changed the life of a child. This book is also important to parents and those who work with children, when we, as adults understands the risks that children, adolescents and any person who is not able to protect themselves are facing, we hopefully can be more vigilant of children, women and any possible
