Her marriage with Logan was very underwhelming. The marriage to Logan had not fulfilled any expectations. She entered this marriage partially for the sake of fulfilling my Grandmother’s wishes, and partially because she hoped that she would find love by marrying Logan. She began to realize that love cannot be created by marriage. She understands that Logan surely did not marry her for love, but rather he married her for the purpose of sex and as a field hand. She feel like she is being used, and she has been considering leaving Logan in spite of my Grandmother’s wishes.

Throughout most of their marriage, Janie submits to Joe’s verbal abuse without saying anything back to him. This was not because she was not affected, but rather because she took the abuse and bottled up her emotions to it. It is understandable, that Janie was quiet, because she wanted to see if Joe was her chance of true happiness and that she would have to bear with it. It was only when she heard the men talking about women when the reader was finally able to see he openly display her emotions. She claims that they do not really know how women feel, so they are not justified in insulting them as the men had been doing. This reflected how Janie felt about her own relationship with Jody. Ironically, Jody told her to keep her opinion to herself, exemplying her exact point. Joe, no matter how much Janie tried to leave subtle hints, still didn’t realize that Janie just wanted someone to love, not all the lavishes the world could offer. Instead, Joe treated her like a trophy that couldn’t talk back, conveying how Janie’s actions were not intended to be evil or not of a good wife, but one of a beaten mule that could no longer fight
