World War I was deadly and destructive in many different aspects and affected almost every country. Unlike many other countries after the devastations of World War I, Japan was one of the few that successfully transformed itself the most. This inter war period was a hard time of recovery and transformation for the world after the many long years of war, death and destruction. Some countries recovered more than others. As Japan grew economically, geographically and politically Japan thrived after World War I reparations. These accomplishments were impressive without entirely altering their traditional way of government. After the war most other countries’ economies suffered unlike Japan’s economy. Japan was relatively successful in World War I and that aided them economically after the war ended. They were considered one of the greatest industrial powers and trading partners in Asia during this time. Slowly their country grew in international prestige. In order to maintain this period of successful transformation they drew back from some of their imperial goals in the 1920’s and to protect their relationships with the Western powers, Japanese politicians decided to slow down foreign expansion. They used compromise with other the other great powers of the world like when Japan signed an agreement with the United States, Britain and France to limit the size of their navy. Japan’s government was a military dictatorship ruled by only a few, an oligarchy. They reduced military spending, and later on they introduced universal male suffrage. An outpour of foreign ideas and the labor movement helped improve Japan politically.
