What is Shinto? Discuss it. (4 points)
Shinto is an ancient Japanese religion that was formed in 500 BCE. The word Shinto means “the way of the gods”.
8. What does ‘kami’ mean? (1 point)
Kami is another word for saying God.
9. What are the four affirmations in Shinto? Explain each. (8 points)
Tradition and Family: The main mechanism is seen as the family by which traditions are preserved.
Love and Nature: Nature is sacred. Being in contact with nature is being in close contact to the Gods. Sacred spirits are worshipped as natural objects.
Physical cleanliness: Washed hands, rinsed mouths and people who take baths are followers of Shinto.
Matsuri: Honor and worship that have been given to ancestral spirits and the Kami.
10. Tell me about pagodas and how culture diffusion is relevant here. (4 points)
Pagodas are temples that are usually made out of wood because Japan is mostly volcanic rock. These temples are similar to the ones in China, but pagodas are more richly decorated. Though pagodas are built to withstand island storms and earth quakes.
