In the book Bad Boy Walter Dean Myers talks about id families’ background information. Roots, which is chapter 1, explains how s real mother died after giving birth to Imogene, Walter’s youngest sister. “Mary Dolly Green, which was Walter Dean’s real mother, had five children: Gertrude, Ethel, George, Walter and Imogene,” states page 3. Walter Dean considered his father’s first wife as his mother, her name was Florence Dean.
With this time period in mind, the audience can infer the financial situation of their family is very dire and that they are holding on by a thread to even live a normal life. Moreover it explains how the play is narrated and held in the point of view of the main character, Tom, and it is a memory play which illustrates that the play is taking place in Tom's memory which recalls events from a person's life that may be exaggerated and described in a sentimental way thus showing how many parts may become fairly unrealistic. Furthermore, in scene two, where the audience is told that Laura, the sister, dropped out of college due to an incident involving a panic attack, the audience is able to understand her personality by demonstrating that she has a very anxious, shy, and coward-like personality, thus adding to the exposition of the character traits. Also, with her dropping out, it explains that the tuition for her college was fifty dollars which was a lot of money, and that it was their mother's, Amanda's, plans and ambitions thrown down the drain which further supports that the family is in need of money because of the Depression. These overall, add to the exposition of the plot by explaining the setting, adding to the character traits, and things as such, but it may also include the rising action which is when Laura decided to drop out of her college, wasting the fifty dollars her mother paid for her
She was reading angry at her brother because he destroys the family making the parent suffer emotional and mental. She explains how the brother addiction turns her house outside down with this attitude. However, the brother addiction makes the parents to never give up on him even though his negative behavior toward them. Parents love him unconditional because it was their son. Even though he was not on the best path, they still support him and be on his side because they believe that he can change.

One day, when the narrator was walking down the street while eating yam, he noticed an eviction of two old couples. The narrator felt sorry for the couples so he became angry, which made him give a speech. Brother Jack offers a job opportunity in the Brotherhood organization because of the inspirational speech he gave at the eviction of the old couples.
In Black Boy, Richard Wright leads a difficult life, yet he is able to persevere through it. Richard has an independent personality that protects him from getting betrayed, but his stubbornness causes him trouble to adapt to a better life. His superior intelligence gives him an advantage over others and makes him think about the future more than others, but they mistreat him for it. Because of his high intelligence, he shares a different moral of equality that makes him stand alone against the whites. The unique personality and beliefs of Richard Wright, like his stubbornness to change, lead to a life of isolation that caused his actions to deviate towards conflict pushing others away.

The memoir tells a story of young Richard growing up in the south, living with his family he experienced many struggles growing up, beaten and yelled at by his family; his mom, grandmother, employer/employees and the kids at school. Something that is very important about this novel is that it teaches a lesson of helping others, because you are not going to stay with your money when you die.
In Act three (3) of the play, the family uses the remainder of the insurance money to buy themselves a better house in a white neighborhood. Unfortunately the neighbors were not too pleased.
