What’s up my peoples, thanks for tuning into another episode of “Kid Characters”, where we go beyond the words on the paper and into the hearts of the characters. Throughout this seminar I will be elaborating upon the techniques and expertise the great, Craig Silvey used to portray a clear idea that people are quick to judge based on appearance and rumours. This was made possible through the use of the character Jasper Jones who is constructed as an emotion and highly complex character who is directly affected by this trait of human nature. Silvey, throughout the book and through a substantial yet clever use of textual and language features was able to portray this message in such a way he did. I feel that the character of Jasper Jones is better looked at like an orange, this is because like an orange Jasper has a barrier holding back the true inside like an orange skin because if you did not peel an orange you would just think of it as an unwanted hard orange ball. Corrigan on a whole was a vastly prejudice towards people who didn’t abide nor fit by the towns idea and values. Another factor that diminishes the public view on jasper was the fact that he was half indigenous, although at during this time period although the white policy was abolished, people were still preconception towards indigenous people. At the start of the novel Silvey uses the character Charlie Bucktin to tells us there are various rumours surrounding Jasper, portraying Jasper as an outcast in comparison to the community. These rumours and the fact that he is a half cast completely diminishes his true personality and leads people to judge him solely based upon the rumours and his appearance. This can be seen through the following quote “he’s a Thief a Liar, a Thug a Truant. He’s lazy and unreliable.” “he’s feral and an orphan
