Jay Gatsby, actually known as James Gratz, was a young dreamer who came from North Dakota. Gatsby was a mysterious and charming man whom everyone talked about. Most people knew of him; few knew him personally. He was born under his father's poor farmer life and dreamed of a better one. Later in his young years, he joined the military during World War 1 and later in the war, Gatsby became Major in the U.S. Regiment. After the war ended, he attended Oxford University through a program of officers. He fell in love with Daisy, a girl he met in Louisville before he was shipped out to Europe. She became his number one priority to pursue during his life after the war. He knew that she had married while he was away, but still tried to have some sort of relationship with her after all those years. He soon realized that he needed money to win her hand. His parties were what defined him. The majority of the people attending these parties, he did not know personally. He also wasn't in attendance for most of his parties; rather, he was in his office or his room watching the festivities. He loved showing off, whether it be his cars or his house. Jay Gatsby received great pleasure in making sure everyone knew he had money. No one really knew about Gatsby except that he was rich and humble.
