Not so Extraordinary People may seem great until their full background is revealed and their true intentions are exposed. The more people know about the context of a person's beliefs, the more they can show their true aspirations. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby is portrayed as a fantastic man when he shows his estate and belongings. When the true Gatsby is revealed, the thought of him being terrific fades away. Jay Gatsby is not a great man because of his actions to gain his achievements and motives to win Daisy over. Gatsby is not magnificent because he is dishonest in how he presents his accomplishments and loves a married woman. There are rumors about where Gatsby went to college, and they are not fully true. He is not truthful when he explains where he attended and for how long. He pretends to be a man, he is not. Tom gives Gatsby a hard time about Oxford by explaining he is aware that Gatsby attended it a while ago. Gatsby tries to explain he only went there for five months but there are still rumors that people talk about him being an Oxford man that are not completely the truth (Fitzgerald 128). Gatsby is not terrific because he is a man that is willing to love someone who is married. He is fully aware of Daisy’s marriage to Tom, but continues to show interest in her. He ruins a marriage and that is an immoral act to commit. Tom is able to see in Gatsby and Daisy’s eyes that they love each other. Tom was unaware of this as “his mouth opened a little, and he looked at Gatsby, and then back at Daisy as if he had just recognized her as someone he knew a long time ago” (Fitzgerald 119).
