Children grow up with the idea that to succeed in life, you have to be rich, have a nice house and a fancy car with children and a loving spouse. Jay Gatsby started out as a very poor boy and when he got a taste of the good life, he wasn’t about to let it go. He strived to get what he wanted and what he wanted most was to be rich, have power, and to get the love of his life. In the 1920’s, there was a feeling in the air that one could rise up from nothing and have it all, but Gatsby learns that you can’t have it all. Gatsby has always been in love with one woman and that was Daisy. They had a short fling in there earlier years but when Gatsby went off to war, she found herself falling in love with another man. Gatsby had always wanted to prove that he belonged in the higher society so he buys himself a expensive mansion with a gothic feel that just so happens to be next to Daisy. From that day forward, he sets out to impress her by throwing lavish parties to draw her attention, and buying fancy cars, boats, old books, not only to show off his wealth and social and educational status, but to impress Daisy. Gatsby is so caught up in his show to impress Daisy that he when she comes to one of his parties, ”He took out a pile of shirts and began throwing them, one by one, before us, shirts of sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel… While we admired he brought more and the soft rich heap mounted higher – shirts with stripes and scrolls and plaids in coral and apple-green and lavender and faint orange, with monograms of indian blue” (P.89).
