Jay Gatsby was a morally idolized character in Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. From his lavish weekend parties to his attentiveness to others, Gatsby is looked upon the modern man as today's exemplary gentleman. As Gatsby explains his background to Nick he brings up his deployment in the military. Jay doesn’t boast or brag, he simply pulls his metal out of his pocket to show Nick the excellence awarded to him by every Allied government. This part of the book delineates Jay Gatsby as a heroic figure. The era that this novel was published in represented a complete turn-around in cultural traditions, however, soldiers were always adored. Gatsby’s position in the military helped depict the desired image of his character as proud, brave and
