Throughout Armstrong’s career he had numerous achievements and awards. In 1936 Louis Armstrong became the first African- American to appear in a major Hollywood film “Pennies from Heaven”, with his friend Bing Crosby. That same year Armstrong became the first Africa-American jazz musician to write an auto-biography,” Swing That Music”. By 1937 he became the first Africa-American to host a nationally sponsored radio show. In 1949 TIME magazine paid tribute to Armstrong, making him the very first jazz musician to ever grace the cover.
I read an article about introducing jazz into the standard elementary music curriculum. Laura Ferguson’s idea was that if you introduced jazz into the standard curriculum, it will be very beneficial to the students learning and great to get them comfortable with jazz. Ferguson also talked about all the ways that you could fit the ideas into your current curriculum, ways to change what you already have, and to get students comfortable with improvisation. The author states many different ways to add jazz into the class. Ferguson gives many examples of taking games that already exist in your class, and just modifying them slightly.
For my lab report, I watched “The EAV History of Jazz with Billy Taylor”. This informative video traced the history of Jazz from its roots in the plantation spirituals to the modern day jazz fusion. The video features Billy Taylor’s trio performing many different Jazz styles such as its early forms Ragtime, Blues, and Swing; the fast-paced Bebop music, the Latin influenced Afro-Cuban Jazz, and the emotional “I wish I knew how it would feel to be free”, which was written by Billy Taylor himself. There wasn’t exactly a predominant style in this video since Billy Taylor was demonstrating the different styles that have emerged throughout the history of Jazz.

As a young boy, he had a very difficult childhood after his father abandoned the family, which he dropped out of school and helped his mother to provide for the family. Louis was a highly talented singer blessed with a powerful gravelly voice and he was one of the first African American entertainers to be highly popular among the white and black society. Louis Armstrong was one of the most influential artist in history of jazz music, he was known for his improvisation skills and abilities of the method of playing the trumpet and cornet. When Louis discovered that he was naturally gifted in music, he established himself as a respected player of jazz music over a period of years.
The Jazz Age was a term used by F. Scott Fitzgerald to refer to the 1920s, but it was also a cultural movement that took place in America during this decade. It was also known as “the Roaring Twenties”. This movement coincided with the end of the World War I and the introduction of the mainstream radio. The era ended with the crash of 1929, which caused the Great Depression.
Bud Powell was born in 1924 into a family of musicians. His father was a stride pianist, his older brother played trumpet, and his younger brother played piano as well. As early as the age of five, Powell was under classical instruction. While his father wished for him to learn the ways of Chopin and Bach, Powell leaned more towards the bluesy tunes of Theolonious Monk, who was the first to take notice of Powell’s talent at Minton’s Playhouse where both frequented in Powell’s teenage years. Powell joined his older brother’s band and later ended up leaving high school to join the swing band of Cootie Williams.
For social studies I selected two assignments which was really important for me. Those are booklet about “The jazz age” and a current event of governmental issues. My first assignment the jazz age booklet require a few art to draw and describe the meaning of the pictures, it involves some of my consideration to make sure everything what it needs. My one of my favorite works of art is “Haitian Fight Song” by Charles Mingus. It is a jazzy tune in which he very first recorded in the 1950’s. There are many different versions of this song however, the one to which I am referring to is the second version he recorded in 1957. I consider this song one of my favorites because of what this song is supposed to symbolize. During this time, the Civil Rights Movement was taking place and Mingus created this song with the intent of it being the symbol of resistance to racism, colonialism and other injustices.
