Lizeth Martinez Paula Nelson English III 1 May 2024 Jeannette’s Mom The popular and acclaimed novel “The Glass Castle” was written by a well-known author, Jeannette Walls, with her novel being officially published in March, 2005. The book is based on a true story, and it is considered a memoir. The author narrates her own childhood and all the hardships she and her family went through over the years of her childhood. Facing poverty, sexual assault, neglect and violence as a child is one of the main issues in Jeannette’s family. On Jeannette’s life journey, along with her two siblings, Lori and Brian, she has to face the complex parenting of Rose Mary Walls, who is optimistic, selfish, and proud. Jeannette explains how she disagrees with Erma’s point of view on African Americans after she made offensive comments, by which her mother explains to her that her grandmother went through a rough childhood and that it was all she knew, adding “Everyone has something good about them, you have to find the redeeming quality and love the person for that” (114). This shows how even after such an incident, she still somehow finds a way to see the good in Erma. Jeannette’s mom shows a side of her described by Jeannette herself where she is continuously selfish many times in the book, thinking only of herself before anyone else, including her own kids, specifically when it comes to feeding Jeannette, Lori and Brian. An example of this would be when they were all sitting in the living room when Jeannette’s father wasn’t home and Jeannette found herself and her siblings starving with no food in the house, while Rose was secretly eating a bag of chocolates under her blanket in order for her kids to not see her and have to share her chocolates with
