The way I think this quote relates to Long Long After School is that Wes,is almost like inspired by Miss Tretheway’s kindness towards him. The section that states, “the things we value” I believe that in the kind doing of Miss Tretheway’s actions, she really touched his life. Although in the text it never stated that he remained kind we can make an inference; since Wes visited her grave, this shows that she had some sort of impact in his life. “We set our goals and make our decisions” I suppose that throughout the years Wes established his goals and decisions on things that are good. So ”the things we value are the things which we set our goals and make our decisions” means, in relation to the text, is that Wes really valued Miss Tretheway
The city also didn’t have fire alarms in almost every building, just the ones that could afford it. Even some schools didn’t have a fire alarm. The fire could have been able to be prevented by using other materials. Some buildings that weren't made out of wood, still caught fire.
The American Dream was once the idea of being able to come from poverty and take that and create something from nothing making a better life for one’s family than had in the past. In the book They Say, I say With Readings Cal Thomas and Brandon King have both written papers discussing the topic of the American dream each author using a different angle to exploit their views on the topic. This paper will analyze both author’s texts, creating three different points made by each and comparing them. The first point will be on the American Dream and how it is portrayed in both texts. The second point will cover any texts used in the essays in comparison to the other paper and how those writings improve the author’s argument.
In Terrance Hayes’s poem “Mr. T-,” the speaker presents the actor Laurence Tureaud, also known as Mr. T, as a sellout and an unfavorable role model for the African American youth for constantly playing negative, stereotypical roles for a black man in order to achieve success in Hollywood. The speaker also characterizes Mr. T as enormous and simple-minded with a demeanor similar to an animal’s to further his mockery of Mr. T’s career. The speaker begins his commentary on the actor’s career by suggesting that The A-Team, the show Mr. T stars in, is racist by mentioning how he is “Sometimes drugged / & duffled (by white men) in a cockpit,” which seems to draw illusions to white men capturing and transporting slaves to new territories during the time of the slave trade (4-5).
In his poem “Behind Grandma’s House,” Gary Soto details the life and daily routine of a somewhat masochistic ten year old boy as he kicks over trash cans, terrorizes cats, and drowns ant colonies with his own urine. In many ways the boy acts as any other boy his age would be expected to, but he tends to go further than most young boys with his actions and descriptions of how he feels. This extra violence and destructive tendency the narrator exhibits can lead the reader to believe that, rather than being a typical child, he strongly craves attention due to his circumstances, and he is willing to act out and act obscenely in order to receive that attention. The ramification of the war prior, during and after still haunt the current citizens who call The States their home. Tony Horwitz’s book Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War looks at the wide gap of discontent that still looms in the late 1990s. For some southerners, the Confederacy still lives on through reenactments, stories and beliefs. For others in the South, reminders the land was dedicated to the Confederacy spark hatred and spite.
In Tim O'Brien's “Enemies” and “Friends”, O'Brien shows the effect the nature of war has on individuals and how war destroys and creates friendships. These two stories describe the relationship between two soldiers, Lee Strunk and Dave Jensen. In “Enemies”, friendship is broken over a fist fight about a stolen jackknife, which leaves Strunk with a broken nose and Jensen paranoid of whether or not Strunk’s revenge is coming. While in “Friends”, you see how the nature of war creates a bond of trust, even between people who first saw each other as enemies.
Holden Caulfield lives his life as an outsider to his society, because of this any we (as a reader) find normal is a phony to him. Basically, every breathing thing in The Catcher in the Rye is a phony expect a select few, like Jane Gallagher. What is a phony to Holden and why is he obsessed with them? A phony is anyone who Holden feels is that living their authentic life, like D.B. (his older brother). Or simply anyone who fits into society norms, for example, Sally Hayes.
Flames wane and flicker, similar to the lives of the survivors. The ability to live on exists in carrying the fire. In contrast, the flames of a fire is a delicate art, something that may bring destruction if not carefully handled. Just as it brings warmth and life, fire brings death as well. Fire brings warmth to those who stay close to its flames, but will burn those who touch it.
In the story “A Christmas Memory” by Truman Capote, imagery is used to create an image in your mind by appealing to your five senses. Imagery is often used to describe the setting of the story and to give you an idea of what is going on. Capote shows many examples of imagery throughout the story to make you understand the importance of his memory. The use of imagery helps create the mood by making the story real and bringing you in what Capote saw.
Mendacity is the act of lying and being untruthful. Everyone lies some point in their lives either to avoid a certain punishment or for a certain reward. People might also lie about being troubled in order to avoid talking about their issues with other people or because they are worried about their friends and family finding out about their issues. Mendacity is a topic that is explored in the play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Most of the characters, in one way or another, are living a lie.
There are many strategies to stop smoking. First of all the smoker could make a list of all the reasons why they want to quit smoking or they could distract themselves when they feel cravings to smoke again.(21) But if independent strategies do not work, then the smoker could talk to the doctor about safe medications to take that are approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. For example they could use nicotine replacement therapy which is taking other nicotine products with smaller doses of nicotine to help get off of smoking rather than quitting completely all at once.
Perhaps, you were influenced by your family, friends, or colleagues who smoke, and later on became a way for you to relate with them. How to quit smoking? In order for you to effectively quit smoking, you have to do something about your cravings and habits. Take time to think of what kind of smoker you are, and when are the times that you usually need to smoke and why.
