In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, Calpurnia, and Atticus stand out when courage comes to mind. These characters show courage in many unique ways with different situations. In the early 1930s, in the deep south, racial discrimination was a huge conflict, for example, the Jim Crows Laws were in play, and it legalized segregation between blacks and whites. Courage isn’t always shown in situations, but simply throughout growing up.
To begin, after the fire at Miss Maudie’s, Jem learns that Boo Radley put a blanket around Scout, he decided to come clean. “Jem seemed to have lost his mind. He began pouring out our secrets right and left in total discretion for my safety, if not his own, omitting nothing, knot-hole, pants and all”(Lee 98). This demonstrates Jem’s maturity because he did not have to tell Atticus everything about what they have done to Boo Radley, but because he felt bad because they had the wrong impression of Boo he told Atticus everything. The second time is after Jem looked like he would bother Boo Radley and Atticus told him not to Jem decided that he would leave Boo Radley alone.
Dill dares Jem to touch the Radley house, inside Jem is fearful, but he confronts his fear and touches the house, all because “in all his life, Jem had never declined a dare” (Lee 16). Jem wants to impress people with bravery, by touching the house he shows his bravery. He does not decline dares because he feels he will seem weak if he did. Jem is courageous. Scout compliments her brother when she describes Jem’s tenacity by stating that he was “not one to dwell on past defeats” (Lee 68).
Courage in To Kill a Mockingbird When the word courage is thrown into a conversation, most think about the courageous hero in tall tales saving towns, countries, or the world. Never, do people think of an inner courage within themselves or between one other person. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, the author, Harper Lee demonstrated courage in many different situations, in which a few will be mentioned later on. This novel circles around a young girl named Scout, and her close friends and family. Scout's father, Atticus, is a lawyer defending an African American man, which seems to be socially unacceptable in this time period.

In the book Jem shows courage by doing things others are too scared to do. “Jem was not one to dwell on past defeats: it seemed the only message he got from Atticus was insight into the art of cross examination.” (Lee, 51). This quote shows that Jem has the courage to keep going on even though he as been defeated. Also shows how he can lead people with his courage.
Courage means the ability to do something that frightens one. Everyone has had a tough time in thier live when they needed to have courage. Scout and Jem are in the middle of a rough time in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee where they live in Maycomb with their father, Atticus. Maycomb is a place that suffers from a lot of prejudice and racism. Jem changed throughout the story as he learned that it’s important to have courage especially when it gets hard.
Courage is a huge theme in the book “To Kill a Mockingbird”. Most of the characters in the book show some courage during certain times. Some of the characters are very important while others are not so much of main characters, but they still show courage. There are many examples of courage in the book “To kill a Mockingbird”.
Allowing for Timelessness Within To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee allows moral and physical acts of courage to be significant parts of the story and help account for the creation of such a timeless and sublime book. Throughout the book, there are people who do extremely brave things that can sometimes show courage for physical matters. Scout and Jem allowed their courage to push them to make the bold decision to walk home in the darkness of night without adult company.
The book To Kill a Mockingbird explores many ideas and themes. I have noticed that bravery is something that really stands out to me in this book. Bravery can be shown in many different ways. Many people think that courage is shown by “defeating the villain”, but it’s usually displayed in little actions that matter. Characters in this book such as, Jem, Scout, Atticus, and Tom Robinson have so much strength and courage.

He is someone that kids are afraid of because of what happened at their house and he has been hiding in his house ever since. In the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird”, Harper Lee illustrates Jem and Scout’s journey to realize what ‘real courage’ truly is. Being exposed to different forms of courage leads an individual to change their idea of courage. The surroundings of the siblings input a strong one-sided view of courage. Atticus explains hidden struggles which use a different form of courage in a community that both know so well and start to create doubts. Furthermore, experiencing such a rare type of courage from the closest and most important person in their life removes their stereotype.
