Characteristics such as temperament, loyalty, sensitivity, insecurity, independence, etc. differ us from the rest of the world, and are what people use to judge us. Whether you live your life in a shell, hidden from the public eye, or your life is an open book, and your voice can be heard miles away, we are all made up of different qualities, qualities that make us unique. Nevertheless, there are others in this world that somehow share these similar traits, and we cannot help but wonder if we are somehow connected. Bren is a close friend to Theodore, who later befriends Violet and becomes her one true best friend. Popping up here and there to set things straight between the two main characters, Jennifer Niven has given her pure Leo qualities which are described in the zodiac description as, “...vocal about their opinions. That's okay, because if you observe, the Leo is usually correct in his/her statements. Leo's have a savvy way of analyzing a situation and executing swift judgment with a beneficial outcome... Beneath their dynamic persona lies a generous, loving, sensitive nature that they do not easily share with others. They might be a bit bossy, but those who know them understand this comes from a source need to do good, not (usually) from an inflated ego.” Brenda is the lovable best friend who acts as a bridge between the budding romance in the beginning of the novel. Just like a Leo, Bren is not afraid to have strong opinions, that are usually correct, nor is she afraid to let others hear them: “‘No.’ Bren is shaking her head so hard and fast, it looks like she’s having a seizure. ‘You don’t dress to please a girl-especially not a girl like that. You dress to please yourself. If she doesn't like you for you, then you don’t need her’”(148).
