Jenny's Life In 'Lawns' By Mona Simpson

As a reader, when I stumble upon a story such as Mona Simpson's “Lawns”, I find it can be a very pleasant experience. With a structure, a timeline, and a narration such as this one, the connection between the reader and the story can be very different, allowing you to submerge completely into Jenny's life. “Lawns” is divided into three main parts were Jenny narrates three aspects of her life: her present, her past, and a resolution, and as a result, we get a complete idea about her and why she is like she is now. A very interesting thing about this short story is the narration, which seems to take place in different points of time. This helps divide the story into three main parts. The first part consists of an explanation on how Jenny lives her life now. For instance, we find out Jenny takes pleasure stealing from the mail office in her college, particularly letters or cookies. In addition, we learn about her boyfriend, Glenn, which she seems to be very fond of. However, she has no problem lying to him, and has been making several remarks about some secrets she was keeping, which up until this point we assumed were related to her stealing.
