Famous Mississippian: Jerry Rice
Jerry Rice is a famous hall of fame football player who many people consider to be the best wide receiver of all time. Did you know he is from Mississippi? There are many great athletes from Mississippi such as, Walter Payton, Brett Favre, Archie Manning, and many other hall of fame players. Jerry Rice is a little different then most hall of fame football players because he didn’t receive much collegiate attention despite having an outstanding high school career. Jerry had a great collegiate and professional career where he broke many records.

In his rookie season he averaged 18.9 yards per catch despite struggling to hold on the ball in his first few games (Pro Football hall of fame ). Jerry Rice had eleven straight one thousand-yard seasons, and made the Pro-bowl every year from 1986-1998. Rice and the 49ers made it to the Superbowl in 1988, 1989, and 1994. They won all three years, and Rice was named to MVP of Superbowl XXIII which was played in the 1988 season (Editors of Enclyclopaedia britannica). As his run in San Francisco began to slow down he was traded to the Oakland Raiders before the 2001 season. Rice had yet another outstanding season and the Raiders made it to the Superbowl in 2001 but fell short to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Editors of Enclyclopaedia britannica). While he was in Oakland Rice became the first player to ever have two hundred career touchdown catches. Jerry Rice had yet again made the Pro-bowl in the 2003 season. Then midway through the 2004 season Rice was traded to the Seattle Seahawks, but was released at the end of the season. He tried to become a starting wide receiver again with the Denver Broncos in 2005 but was unsuccessful. Jerry Rice then sign a ceremonial one-day contract with the San Francisco 49ers and then retired from the NFL, and was inducted into the hall of fame in 2010 (Editors of Enclyclopaedia
