A model citizen of the community, Jerry Sandusky joined the Penn State staff as assistant football coach under Joe Paterno in 1969. He was also a founder of The Second Mile charitable organization to help disadvantaged youth. Sandusky retired from this position in 1999 but still had access to the campus due to him being an emeritus professor (Crandall, 2014). Sandusky was found guilty of 45 counts of child sex abuse in 2012. He sexually abused 10 boys over a 15 year period (Cheppell, 2012). The scandal was that these charges occurred both on and off campus and there were four high ranking officials at the University knew about it and did not bring it to various authorities including the Board of Trustees. She reported that Sandusky had showered with her son in the Lasch Building. The investigation revealed no evidence of a crime. In a meeting with Sandusky, that included a caseworker from the Department of Public Welfare, the police detective advised Sandusky not to be showering with any other children (Crandall, 2014). The case was closed. The four officials were all informed of the police report and investigation status, but none reported it to the trustees or acted on it, they continued as if it did not happen. In February 2001 the football assistant Mike McQueary reported to Coach Paterno that he witnessed a sexual encounter between Sandusky and a 10 year old boy in the showers of the Lasch Building. Paterno met with Curley, Schultz and Spanier and they agreed to confront Sandusky. March 5 they met with Sandusky to inform him that they were uncomfortable with his behavior and he could not bring young boys to the facilities anymore.
