“Handler” by Jane Martin and “Jesus Shaves” by David Sedaris have different outlooks on the higher power of faith. The narrator in “Handler” says that “there is one sure thing in this world…yer empty, yer gonna get bit” (Mays 1666). You have to be filled with the spirit of faith because if you’re not, you will be bitten. In “Jesus Shaves”, the narrator is saying that faith is a personal thing, whether you can see it or not. Most people want to believe there is a higher power and because of that belief, it is easy to believe the things taught as a child, and believed as an adult.
In the “Handler” the main character Caro, believes protection from the snake comes from an inner strength: a strong heart and a satisfied spirit. To her, the idea of “God” is a fluid thing, not necessarily the God of Abraham, but the belief in something bigger than ourselves, something more powerful than any one human. Caro say “It’s right there in the scripture ….. “Mark Chapter 16. Verses 17 and 18, they shall take up serpents; and if they shall drink any deadly thing, it shall not harm them” (Mays 1665). It is a show that is performed by the Holiness Church to convert others to their beliefs, they believe “Snake knew”, “snakes knows what you feel” (Mays 1666). Caro says “Snake.” “You Satan hand-maiden” (1666).
