In Across Five Aprils, there are many views on war talked about. People think of war in different ways, even family members think differently than each other. Since this book is Historical Fiction, the views in this book express the ways the author feels, especially on war. In this essay I will explain the author’s emotions and opinions on this topic.
In the beginning of the book, the emotion I think was expressed was excitement. Even though some of the character’s opinions were against war, the story focuses on Jethro’s family. Jethro, Tom, and Eb are all excited about war. They want to help fight, and they think it is going to be a great adventure. The text says, “The thought of war had given him a secret delight only a matter hours before; it had meant something of the same kind of joy he had known while watching the young mean race their horses up and down the road past the cabin on a Sunday afternoon;”. They are giving great causes as to why the war needs to happen. This main reason is slavery. During the Civil War, and the book, some of the people in the North want to fight to end slavery because they think it’s wrong. Some of the people in the the South want to fight because they want to keep slavery. The author mainly focuses on the people in the North, who do not think slavery is right. Since The Creighton’s live in the North and most of them are against slavery, I think the author feels he would also support the North because he wouldn’t think slavery is
