To start, I am going to discuss the similarities and differences in the Jewish and Christian faith. These religions have similar origins but varying beliefs, practices, and teachings. A similarity between the two is that they both mention Adam and Eve’s sin in the creation story. The creation story states in the Garden of Eden Adam and Eve trusted the serpents’ half-truths, which lead them to disobey God and bring death into the world (Kramer 128). In addition, the Jewish & Christian perspective of death believes that the body and soul are separate. In terms of the afterlife, there are some varying viewpoints. Some Jews believe that the dead go to Sheol, a non-land, where the soul skims to oblivion whereas others believe in a resurrection of the soul (Leming 129). There’s uncertainty in this religion about the afterlife. The Christian view on the afterlife is centered on the resurrection of Jesus. That being said, Hindus believe that one’s present life is determined by one’s actions in a previous life (Leming 134). Buddhism centers on a different belief on death, which relates to suffering. Buddha’s view on death, which Buddhist follow, states that as long as one is completely absorbed in grief there can be no release from the fear of death (Kramer 43). This outlook urges individuals to detach themselves to avoid the pain and sadness surrounding death. A similarity between the two is the goal to not experience life after death. For Buddhists, their goal after death is to experience nirvana. Nirvana is the liberation from suffering, extermination of desires, eradication of ignorance, a state of peace (Kramer 53).
