Jewish Resistance in Ghettos
The Holocaust lasted from January 30th, 1933 to May 8th, 1945 and was led by Adolf Hitler. It occurred mostly in Poland and Germany, but it left an impact on the world. The Holocaust was a mass murder of around six million Jews. This happened because when Hitler became chancellor, he wanted to exterminate all of the Jews. He thought they were responsible for sending the world into its first World War. WWI resulted in about 100,000 German soldiers killed in battle, and it aggravated Hitler. The Jews had so many goals, but were held back by their obstacles. They faced very harsh conditions and had to make many difficult decisions. These obstacles included the danger of being caught, they need of training, and the fact that the small number of guns wouldn’t stop Germans anyway. The danger of being caught smuggling arms or other items into the ghetto, could easily result in death. If death wasn’t the penalty, the subject would more than likely be beaten. The “Address by Gens” states, “And even if you get 30,40, or 50 revolvers, you will not be able to save yourselves, and will only bring your misfortune faster” (Arad). This proves armed resistance was a very difficult task and brought about about a large risk if danger. Two Germans were killed because a Jewish girl shot without orders. So, her gun was taken away from her and an Aktion occurred, which meant the deportation and execution of many Jews. Therefore, if they did anything wrong, they endangered not only their own lives, but the lives of others as well. The book Resistance states, “The head of the Judenrat, the Jewish council selected by Nazis to run the ghetto, thought that storing arms would only endanger more lives” (Anflick 24). This quote proves that everyone could agree that trying to resist was a grueling task with many barriers that they had to pass to complete their goals.
