JFK Assassination John F. Kennedy (JFK) was in Dallas, Texas on Friday, November 22, 1963 campaigning for the upcoming election. He was riding in an open-top 1961 Lincoln Continental 4-door convertible limousine with his wife, Jacqueline and the Governor of Texas and his wife, John and Nellie Connally. JFK was on a route designed to allow many people to see him. It was a warm, clear, happy day until the motorcade turned left on Elm Street. JFK’s last words were a response to Nellie Connally, she had said “Mr. President you can’t say Dallas doesn't love you”. He responded with “No, you certainly can’t”. LBJ was sworn into office less than 3 hours after the shooting. He took the oath of office on Airforce One at the airport. President Johnson’s first presidential proclamation came the following day when he declared November 25, 1963 would be a national day of mourning for John F. Kennedy. After the assassination of JFK the secret service changed many policies, such as; all presidents must ride in enclosed cars, presidents may no longer walk along the routes to shake hands, congress allowed Mrs. Kennedy and her children 2 more years of protection after leaving the White House and then in 1965 congress voted for lifetime protection, and the secret service has grown from 513 in 1963 to over 6500 today. Newsman, Walter Cronkite broke the news on television. JFK’s body laid in the East room of the White House for 24 hours before being taken by a horse drawn wagon to Arlington National Cemetery where his grave has an eternal candle.
