Kennedy could hear the crunch of metal against pavement, the shattering of glass, and the squealing of tires. She could taste blood in her mouth, and feel the seat belt burning against her neck as the car contorted itself into a twisted tangled mess around the barely standing power pole. Her screams caused her to jolt out of her fitful slumber. Kennedy tried to calm down and orient herself. She was having flashbacks again. Still panicked, Kennedy repeatedly hit the call button on the side of her bed. “Kennedy, is everything okay?” Barbra, the nurse on duty asked in a soothing but concerned tone. “Umm, sort of. It was only 9 a.m. Kennedy could feel the stars on her back burning like they were trying to burn through her clothes. She knew someone was going to see them. Kennedy didn’t want people asking if tattoos were a structural part of drug rehab. It's not like Kennedy was a typical addict anyway. She had been an honor student with an impeccable 4.8 grade point average. She had full ride scholarships to any of the top Ivy League Universities she wanted, had even acquired early admission into some of them. She was supposed to take classes online this semester. She had been one bad grade away from a complete mental breakdown, and had compromised her morals in order to succeeded. Kennedy had become addicted to prescription drugs, and the impact they had on her achievements. She had different drugs for different situations. She had prescriptions that helped her stay awake during the long hours of studying. Drugs that had kept her energized through grueling choir rehearsals and long, boring student council meetings. She was also on medication that kept her anxiety at bay. Drugs also had drawbacks though; Kennedy had learned about those the hard way. She learned that being on a high does not go well with driving. She had wrapped her car around a power pole just after it had been struck by lightning, causing the worst single car wreck in the history of Loganville, all while nearly killing herself in the process. The doctor had told Kennedy’s family that she had began to heal at an abnormally rapid rate after they and Tracen had arrived at the hospital, and that they had wanted to do test to see if the drugs had an effect, but Tracen wouldn’t allow it. He convinced her parents that the doctors would turn Kennedy into their own personal lab rat if they let them start running more test.
