“Change is the law of life, and those who look only to the past and present are certain to miss the future.” — John F. Kennedy. This quote from JFK represents how change will always happen and it can be good or bad, but you should never dwell on it. Just as previously depicted, the group of boys in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies experience a large change throughout the book. The boys that have the most noticeable changes throughout the book are Jack, Ralph, and Samneric. To begin, Jack shows many changes in the book and goes from a civil person to a savage hunter. This is displayed in many ways such as starting as a normal boy who was stranded on an island, to then becoming a savage hunter and killing people. At the beginning of the book, Ralph was a very optimistic and organized person. He also had control of everyone because he was the leader and everyone looked up to him. “All this I meant to say. Now I've said it. You voted me chief. Now you do what I say” (Golding 81). This quote shows that Ralph is the chief and had command over the rest of the boys. Later in the book more and more of the boys start following Jack which then takes the command away from Ralph. In continuation, Samneric also goes through many mental changes in the book, to begin with they are loyal and cheerful until the end of the book when they are fearful and conflicted. In the beginning they showed their loyalty by always following Ralph's lead and doing menial tasks that were asked of them. They were depicted as happy to do whatever was asked of them as long as they could do it together. But later, towards the end of the book, they became fearful of Jack and the rest of his savages. They were both mentally conflicted as to what side they should be
