The book The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow describes the laws that were put in place after the Civil War, Jim Crow laws. These laws were created to discriminate and disenfranchise blacks. It blocked the educational, economic, social growth and opportunities for black southerners. Blacks could not vote or serve on juries. Black people had to eat, drink, and go to school in a separate place from whites.
Between 1887 and the mid 1960’s , the Jim Crow Laws were not only a series of anti- Black laws, it started to mould American society and became a way of life. African Americans were reduced to second class citizens and the danger of segregation was heavily emphasised. Segregation was seen throughout all aspects of life, and was particularly evident in baseball. In Eighteen-eighty-three, Moses Fleetwood Walker became the first professional black baseball player who played for a white major league team and joined the American Association.
The Jim Crow Law was put into effect in the late nineteenth century, it's purpose was to create a system of racial etiquette that supports previous patterns of black subordination(pg.434). The Jim Crow Law was meant to oppress African Americans, by making blacks give way to whites on the sidewalk, making black men remove their hats, bow their heads and also look away black men had to look away when spoken to by white men. The black people of America were subjected to segregation and seen as the lower class, could not have mixed marriages, or even carry a gun. Many Southern states created laws to prevent blacks from voting and traveling. Jim Crow`s Laws were simply unjust. During the end of the reconstruction era and through the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement, Jim Crow laws were enforced in order to maintain proper racial segregation. Originally, the Jim Crow laws were set to keep the Negroes separate but equal to the white race. In reality, the Jim Crow laws targeted the Blacks and made certain that the African-American race would never have superiority over the White men. Opening Statement: The Jim Crow Laws were a local and state law that was enforced in the early 20th century that regulated segregation. My side of the argument is that they were unconstitutional. During this time period the color of your skin played a big role in who you were as a person. The passing of the Jim Crow Laws made an already racist and unconstitutional mindset legal.
Jim Crow laws were not a universal law; rather it was implemented by local and state codes. The level of segregations also varied across places, the states in the south of America were the worst affected. There were unwritten laws of segregation implemented at different levels making the lives of African American extremely difficult. They were also denied the right to vote.

This is the reason why the whites didn't like the idea of the colored becoming citizens and having the right to vote. Because of this law the colored were still being treated like slaves.

Many states could inflict legal punishments on people for affiliating with members of another race. I think the main reason that the reason the civil rights conflict started was because of the Civil rights law. the law made it so someone 's public establishment could not prohibit someone of a specific origin or religion from entering. Another reason i think this conflict started was because of MLK standing up for what he believed in. He thought that blacks were not treated fairly and he wanted to make a difference, through peaceful speeches and marches such as the Selma march and the I have a dream speech. Another reason this happened was the tension built up from blacks not feeling fairly treated but not being able to do anything about it.
