Born November 27th 1942 Johnny Allen Hendrix (later changed to James Marshall Hendrix) in Seattle, Washington. Known widely as Jimi Hendrix, he instituted major changes to the category of rock and roll by incorporating different sounds never before heard, such as the use of distortion and the wah-wah. He mixed different forms of music such as r&b, soul, jazz, and early American rock and roll to produce sounds that astounded audience abroad. His influence remains strong today as most rock and rock historian’s chronical the history of rock “before” Hendrix and “after” Hendrix. It was in New York City that more people began to take some notice to his creativity and sound. He met Linda Keith after a show, at the time she was dating Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. Seeing his potential she began introducing him to various people from the music industry, with the hopes that someone would pick him up as an artist. Eventually Chaz Chandler the former bassist for the animals seeing Hendrix’s potential offered to manage his career. Unfortunately due to a variety of factors such as Hendrix’s drug use, grueling schedules of recording while touring across the United States, among other poor decisions the group disbanded. Hendrix would later form different ensembles such as the Gypsy Sun & Rainbows who he performed with at Woodstock to close the festival. Although performing to a fraction of the crowd of 400,000 people that had been at the festival in the previous days he again created an iconic moment of rock and roll.
