Jimi Hendrix was one of the most well known guitarists of the sixties. He was a gifted songwriter with his own unmistakable sound, which is nothing short of a miracle, considering he could not read or write (Blake, 2014). Jimi pioneered the explosive possibilities of the electric guitar creating sounds never heard on a guitar. Jimi Hendrix was not born into stardom, nor was it given to him by any means. He strived all throughout his life to be the very best musician. Hendrix was born on November 27, 1942 in Seattle, Washington to his parents Al and Lucille Hendrix (The famous people, 2017). He enlisted on May 31, 1961 and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, where he was stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Hendrix had a rebellious attitude, slept on duty and required constant supervision. According to reports, he was a "habitual offender" when it came to missing midnight bed checks and was unable to "carry on an intelligent conversation"(Famous veterans, 2018). He was not liked by his fellow soldiers because he constantly played guitar and kept them up at night. Although Hendrix signed up for three years of service, Captain Gilbert Batchman had enough after one year, and made the case for Hendrix to be discharged. His problems were judged to not be treatable by "hospitalization or counseling." He met a soldier named Billy Cox who played the bass. Together they formed a band named King Kasulas and performed regularly at a night club in Nashville, Tennessee. As Jimi grew in the industry he was booked for bigger and more popular shows. His performance at Woodstock was one of the greatest moments in pop music history.
