Jimmy Buffett American author Joseph Chilton Pearce once remarked, “To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong.” In order for one to lead an imaginative life, one must learn to lose their dread of not always being right. Born December 25, 1946, in Pascagoula Mississippi, James William Buffett grew up living a life of creativity and intelligence. Buffett earned a Bachelor of Science degree in History & Literature from the University of Southern Mississippi (“Jimmy Buffett - Division of Arts and Culture,” n.d.). He had two daughters, Savannah Bufett and Sarah (Delaney) Buffett, and one adopted son, Cameron Marley/Buffett (Connelly and Vega, 2023). Tropical rock is a music genre originated by Jimmy Buffett in 1977, starting with his hit “Margaritaville”, which soon evolved into his very own billion dollar franchise (“Intro to Trop-Rock,” n.d.). Tropical rock, with a more-common nickname of Trop rock, consists of many distinct instruments such as acoustic guitars, steel drums, congas, marimbas, and other percussion instruments (“What is Trop Rock?,” n.d.). Many Trop-Rock artists have their own ‘escapist’ flow, with a light, acoustic-driven form of soft rock. Tropical Rock blends other music genres together such as Rock, Reggae, Country, Caribbean, and Latin to get its beachy ripple. The genre is usually considered Carribean or Florida style, as it is very popular on the Gulf Coast of the United States, but it got it’s start in Southern California by the well-known Buffett we know and love today (“trop-rock wiki,” n.d.). After Trop Rock was a big hit, it influenced music artists to step out of their comfort zone and show their feelings through their music. Tropical rock inspired other musicians to not only mix varying genres, but after Buffett released “A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustcean”, he created his well-known trademark that inspired so many musicians to be who they are today (The Timeless Impact of Jimmy Buffett’s Legacy on Music and Lifestyle,” 2023). Buffett’s music influenced nearly two decades of music, and counting (Hudak, 2023). Buffett’s music allows society to relax, and take a break, letting life take it’s course as people listen to the calming beach vibe of tropical rock. Not only does Tropical Rock give people a chance to relax, it helps people during struggling times to help persevere and take risks that one may not be able to make otherwise.
