Rowling, was born on July 31, 1965, in Yate, England. She adopted her pen name, J.K., incorporating her grandmother's name, Kathleen, for the latter initial (Rowling does not have a middle name)” (Rowling Bio). When Rowling turned 2 years of age, her sister Dianne was born. As two young children, Jo would always read her younger sister stories she wrote. In primary school, a majority of the staff and students treated her unfairly. In an interview, Joanne stated that one of her teachers would make her sit a great distance away from other children during recess. Throughout her childhood, numerous incidents inspired characters and their actions in Harry Potter. In the year 1990, Rowling relocated to Portugal to teach English studies. At a bar, she met a man, Jorge Arantes, who took a career as a television journalist. Later on, they married and had a child in 1993, Jessica. The marriage ended abruptly after, causing Rowling leave Portugal and back to United Kingdom. Rumors have speculated about the cause of separation to be domestic abuse, although have not been confirmed. “While struggling to support Jessica and herself on welfare, Rowling worked on a book, the idea for which had reportedly occurred to her while she was traveling on a train from Manchester to London in 1990.
