Madison Friend English Period 8, CP Mr. O 5/15/17 Joanne Kathleen Rowling, or more formally known as J.K Rowling, is a mother of three, and a British author of the infamous Harry Potter series. She was born in 1965, in Bristol, England. By the time she reached adulthood, she became a single, struggling mother of one, depending on benefits and welfare checks. But with determination, dedication, and at first a rocky start, she later became one of the most successful authors in history. Throughout all this, J.K Rowling raised millions of dollars for charity, has written one of the most recognizable series in history, and still remains humble, even today. So, she created charities like Voltant Trust, and Lumos, which brought in incomes, huge in the “Context of British philanthropy”. Her charity Lumos, focuses on helping children in orphanages around the world. In April of 2001, she opened a “resource center for Scotland’s MS Society”, and gave them a gift that valued at $375,000. She also gave other authors huge advances for their books. J.K Rowling not only created charities, but also donates to many others.
