She was the first person to become a billionaire purely off of a book series. She was the creator of a multi-billionaire industry. I could even go so far as to say that she was the author of my childhood, seeing as her books were definitely the most loved by me growing up- but none of these things are why JK Rowling is my heroine. I’ve loved and admired my fair share of role models, all of whom could be said to have accomplished great things. However, they have lacked what made Joanne Rowling such an influential person in my eyes; Relatability. In order for someone to transcend that gap from incredible to inspiring, to heroic, I need to be able to believe that, like that person, maybe someday, I’d be able to accomplish something like they did. I need an origin story, to be able to see that person work their way up into what he or she became, and to believe that it’s possible for others to do as they did. She spent her teenage years watching as her mother suffered from multiple sclerosis for ten years before eventually dying when Rowling was twenty five, which has been described as the most traumatizing event of her life, according to Telegraph Co. News. Sickness is something everyone in this world must battle, whether personally or through a loved one. I remember the fear and worry I felt as my mother underwent surgery because of a brain tumor, or my grandfather suffered through cancer. My mother is safe and healthy; my grandfather is not. It is not up to us to choose the outcome of these situations, but to choose how we live through them. JK Rowling used a very powerful coping mechanism, one I myself find myself turning to often; her writing. Her mother never knew she was writing Harry Potter, never lived to see her
