At the beginning of the book, Jo and her sisters go through life on a daily routine and decide that they will each buy themselves a present in order to brighten their own Christmas. Shortly after that, they change their minds and instead they each buy presents for their mother, Marmee. Then Marmee comes home with a letter from their father, who is a Union chaplain serving in the American Civil War. The letter motivates the girls to not to complain about on what they lack.
