Joan of Arc was born in Domremy, France in January 1412. She had an uneventful childhood until 1424 when Joan began to hear voices. These voices, which she believed to be angels and saints, would tell her to be devout, to pray, and to rely on God. The voices later told her to visit The French Court and support King Charles VII to rid France of the English. Joan left her family in 1429 to accomplish what the voices told her. Joan, being but a simple peasant, played a large role in the capture of Orleans, Paris, Rheims, and many other towns. Joan was eventually captured and given to the English, who quickly sentenced her to death. Furthermore, Joan became known as a martyr in 1456 and then later was canonized as a saint.
In 1428, Joan, along with her brothers, left their home in Domremy to give King Charles their service. At the age of sixteen, she asked a relative named Durand Lassois to take her to the nearby town of Vaucouleurs, where she petitioned the garrison commander, Robert de Baudricourt, for permission to visit the French Royal Court at Chinon. Baudricourt's sarcastic response did not shatter her hopes but further determined her will to visit the French Royal Court to offer King Charles her service.
