Joe Biden’s Words Use of Rheorical Devices It has been a theme in America for school shootings to occur often. Last year, a shooting in Uvalde, Texas occurred yet again, it left the country in shock. While emotional, Joe Biden made a powerful and effective speech to a crowd in the Roosevelt Room about the devastating occurrences. Joe Biden, our 46th US President, was not thrilled when he had to address another massacre in a school. In Joe Biden’s speech as he speaks to all Americans he uses his emotions and logic to get his point across. Knowing this, as the speech goes on it is very well developed and effective. Logos is when logic or examples are used to get a point across so the speaker sounds professional. This speech was made at the White House, which is a professional setting, Biden explains in his speech, “...a grade school in Connecticut, where another gunman massacred 26 people, including 20 first graders, at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Since then, there have been over 900 incidents of gunfires reported on school grounds.” With Biden pointing out many incidents continuing to occur, it shows his logic with the topic he is talking about. When the audience knows their speaker is educated in what the main topic is, it makes Biden look more intelligent and trustworthy. Biden goes on to say, “Why are we willing to live with this carnage? Why do we keep letting this happen? Where in God’s name is our backbone to have the courage to deal with it and stand up to the lobbies?.” When Biden questions why the audience is letting this happen it will get them thinking about why there is no change. It will bring something to think about when the speech is over and leave a mark. Biden is asking these questions but he isn’t looking for a response, he just wants them to question. Biden also uses repetition along with logos making this heart breaking speech, knowledgeable. Biden goes on to state, “Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Santa Fe High School in Texas. Oxford High School in Michigan. The list goes on and on.” Real schools that have been shot, repeating them and saying, “on and on”. All though this is logic, it brings emotions by knowing real schools have these problems. At the same time he is being intelligent, he is also bringing the emotion.
