This quote from Johann Sebastian Bach gives you an insight on his relationship with music. From a young age Bach was able to play the harpsichord, violin, and organ. He composed not only a massive amount of music, but an incredible variety as well. His work required him to compose for nearly every major genre of the era and his music still inspires and leaves today’s generation in awe. Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Germany. He was the youngest of eight children and his family possessed several musicians amongst his siblings and father. His father was both a violinist and court trumpeter as well as director of music for the town of Eisenach. With a family with a diverse musical background it was natural for Johann to follow in his father’s footsteps. He received many lessons and skills from his father until his father’s death in 1694. His mother also passed the same year, Johann Sebastian was only 10 years old. He was taken in by his older brother Johann Christoph who lived in Ohrdurf, Germany. This really affected the style of music he composed because his style was based upon what job he was working at the time. His music contains many elements used throughout the Baroque era including the use of extremes presented by the wide ranges of the organ. While he did not develop any new styles of forms of music he was able make himself proficient at many that existed.
