Johannes Brahms was a pianist and composer in the romantic period. He was born in Hamburg, Germany and died in Vienna, Austria. These two men quickly became friends, and being that Schumann was also a music critic, the fact that Schumann publicized an article praising Brahms and calling him a genius infinitely helped Brahms’s music career. However, times were changing. Soon composers like Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner were ridiculing Schumann for being too old-fashioned. In 1854, Schumann got sick, and later died in 1856. During the entirety of of Schumann’s illness, Brahms was helping Schumann’s wife, Clara, with the management of her household.
