Lieutenant General John A. Lejeune, 13th Commander of the Marine Corp had an important tenure and is considered the Marine’s “Greatest Strategic Leader” by many. Lt. Gen. Lejeune was a commandant at a turbulent time after World War 1. His actions not only made a huge difference in the outcomes of his day, but also defined the ways, the culture, and mission of the Marines today. Lt. Gen. Lejeune was in a position at a time after World War 1 to accept the challenges of a receding economy as well as significant cut backs and move forth; yet he refused to lay idle and average actions were not part of his character. He created a school for the advantage of those enlisted in the Corp, tying to several competencies, which was unprecedented at the time. His leadership proved to be his legacy that was efficient and provided an impactful momentum for change. Three Guiding Principles are at the very core of what's is still used in the Marines; (1) administer affairs economically and efficient, (2) strive to be useful to the government and people that it serves during both peace and wartime, and (3) make Marine Corp the finest military organization in the world. Lieutenant General John A. Lejeune would have no doubt been remembered as a fine leader, yet his abilities and insight into the importance of organizing a more efficient and economical plan during a time of such dramatic cutbacks to the government has made a lasting impression.
