Felony (noun): a crime, typically one involving violence, regarded as more serious than a misdemeanor, and usually punishable by imprisonment for more than one year or by death. John Brown was a historical figure in Kansas who was involved in events from 1855 to 1859. Some call him a hero, even though he tortured and murdered 5 people. Even if it was in the name of slavery, that’s not the right thing to do. We should remember John Brown today as a reminder of the dark past of American history and to help us not make the same mistake again. John Brown was a villain because he murdered people, lied about many important things, and stole things. First of all, he murdered 5 people. In Document E, the letter from Mahala Doyle, she mentions that he killed her husband and 2 of her sons, although they had never owned slaves. He also killed two other people. This shows that even though he claimed to be murdered in the name of slavery, he wasn’t. He even asked all of the victims about their opinions on slavery. …show more content…

Document F shows that John Brown said he meant to take the slaves to Canada peacefully. However, he also ordered 1,000 pikes 2 years earlier (Document C). Also, in Document G, John Brown admits that he only meant to give them pikes and not take them to Canada. This shows that even though he was on trial, he still decided to lie and try to save himself.
