Kennedy, had a rocky presidency and had his ups and downs. Many people consider him to be a very successful president, but their minds may be twisted due to his tragic assassination. Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts and attended Harvard University. During this time WWII was underway and for some parts of WWII the United States was not in very good shape. There are lots of roles the president needs to be able to play and there are numerous responsibilities that they are supposed to fulfill. To determine whether the president was good or not, they must have many accomplishments and achievements that made America better. Over the short time that Kennedy was in office he played his role as the Commander in Chief throughout the Bay of Pigs attack and Chief Citizen of the United States during the Space Race, Kennedy was far from perfect. Kennedy had his ups and downs due to his embarrassing attempt to assassinate Cuban dictator Fidel Castro and fueling their anger towards America. Even though Kennedy was not perfect, he navigated and inspired us during the space race and landed on the moon. Over President Kennedy’s short term, his accomplishments can determine that he was one of the best presidents known to America. The Department of State suggests that “Although not considered as significant a U.S. foreign policy failure and embarrassment as the Bay of Pigs invasion, Operation Mongoose failed to achieve its most important goals.” (U.S. Department of State) This explains that the U.S. military and Kennedy failed to achieve what their goal was and will be remembered as a laughingstock for decades. This was an important mission and Kennedy failed to succeed due to his inability to have backup plans in case their first attempt failed. After the Bay of Pigs invasion, Kennedy failed once more during Operation Mongoose, making him fail as the commander in chief. As tensions grew between the powerhouse country, the Soviet Union and the United States, the hope of getting to the moon was starting to fade away. The U.S. already lost in the race to get a rocket ship into space, and the Soviet Union was the first country to launch a rocket ship into space. As hope was almost lost, something had to happen, and fast. This is when Kennedy stepped into office and once again used the role of chief citizen to boost morale and most importantly, get to the moon. Kennedy showed leadership to NASA and to the people, ensuring that the United States would get to the moon
