Erik Hayduk Mr. piaquadio 10-7-14 american history The novel “John F Kennedy: Profiles In Courage” written by the Previous president John F Kennedy won the pulitzer Prize for a biography in 1957. It is a novel with a collection of short mini biographies about the most underrated people in the united states senate. John F Kennedy chose eight senators who were extremely underappreciatedly courageous in there day. John F Kennedy believed did the right thing by doing what they believed was right even though it defied the opinions of their parties even though they knew that they would suffer criticism and even some major losses in popularity because of what they believed was the right thing to do even if it was not what their peers believed was the best solution to the problem. John F Kennedy calls him extremely courageous for speaking against the Kansas–Nebraska Act. The Kansas–Nebraska act was the act that the government was going to be pass and if it was passed it allowed the two states, Kansas and Nebraska, to hold a vote to decide weather to be pro slavery or against it. Sam Houston wanted to uphold the Missouri Compromise which was the previous act that had been passed and it said that the southern states from the Louisiana territory and south could all own slaves but north of the Louisiana territory you could not. the states that were free were known as free states and the states that there were slaves were known as slave sates. Sam Houston believed that the Missouri compromise was the way to go. This was an unpopular vote and he was defeated when running for reelection because of the vote.
