John Fitzgerald Kennedy grew up in a large family of nine in Brookline, Massachusetts and was born into a family of businessmen and politicians. Kennedy, as a child, was involved in many sports including basketball, football, and golf. Later into his adulthood, Kennedy graduated from Choate Academy and entered Harvard University in 1936. He was a leader that the people could’ve trusted, a protector where he wouldn’t let anything happen to the people of his country, and a person that wants to see the people of America succeed from what he’s done. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born into a family where success was the most important thing. The Kennedy’s valued academic achievement and physical strength so whether it was grades in school or sports, Kennedy competed with his siblings for their father’s attention. Kennedy was always very sick, which made it much harder to keep up with all of his older brother’s accomplishments. Even though he struggled, Kennedy did everything his brother did to try and capture a moment of his father’s attention. He writes the first reason is, “Americans want to be liked – and Senators are no exception.” To further his point, he includes, “We [Senators] prefer praise to abuse, popularity to contempt,” The second reason is the, “desire to be re-elected,” he proceeds. Kennedy writes, “Where else, in a non-totalitarian country, but in the political profession is the individual expected to sacrifice all – including his own career – for the national good,” to illustrate how much pressure Senators face.

He was a strong, yet physically disabled man, who made everything he promised, possible. Growing up, Kennedy had very many health problems, including measles and chicken pox as an infant. Rose [John's Mother] recorded on his note-card the childhood diseases from which he suffered, such as: "whooping cough, measles, chicken pox." On February 20, 1920 when Jack was not yet three years old, he became sick with scarlet fever, a highly contagious and then potentially life-threatening disease.
A quality such as determination is necessary in order to succeed in a survival situation. If a person decides to give up and quit trying, they will inevitably fail. Kennedy’s story of survival after being stranded on an island exists because he “was still unwilling to admit that things were hopeless” even though the other men were losing hope (Hersey 6). It was essential to their survival that Kennedy persevered over a number of days and through intense physical challenges and kept trying to get help. If he had given up they probably would have died.
On January 20, 1961, former president John F. Kennedy orated his inaugural address at the United States Capitol. Kennedy’s deliverance highlighted his prospective presidency, enumerating key issues such as: economic expansion, social advancements, and new diplomatic relations. Consequently, it was here, when Kennedy questioned his audience one of the most historically-acclaimed quotes in United States history, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”. Kennedy, the youngest president our Nation had ever seen, beautifully defined civic responsibility. Civic responsibility lets the individual discover and internalize their own potential and allows the individual to assist others to do the same.
