Artist Essay – John Green How is one able to capture the true feelings of being a teenager? John Green otherwise known as the “teen whisperer” would most likely have a credible answer to that question. Green’s authentic clever sense of humor, truthful understandings of life and empathetic nature have helped him to become the wildly popular author and youtuber he is today. Most YA authors tend to write the predictable sci-fi adventure or sappy romance in order to attain reader’s attention, but John Green has successfully become one of the most popular YA novelists worldwide by simply writing realistic stories about teenagers like The Fault in our Stars, Looking for Alaska, and Paper towns. The book was published in 2005, and later won the Michael L. Printz award in 2006, it remains a fan favorite to date. All of Green’s books deal with heavy topics especially for young adults and this one is no different falling into the theme of death. Through Miles grief and anguish, readers are able to see the life lesson that is taught; do not dwell in the past. Green teaches this lesson by showing how when Miles can finally accept Alaska’s death and move on he is happier and life gets easier. While Green could have easily made this a typical love story, he instead chose the deeper and darker path of writing a story of losing a loved one. Paper Towns is about yet another high school boy, this time named Quentin. Quentin is shy and conservative and has been his whole life, but a night with the rebellious Margo Roth Spiegelman makes him yearn to be like her. When Margo runs away Quentin makes it his mission to find her, and for the first time he risks everything. Quentin has an image of Margo in his head as a perfect person and he tries to find her without thinking about why she really ran away. Margo didn’t want to be found. When he finally encounters her again he realizes that the image he had of her wasn’t really her at all, it was just who he wanted her to be. This encounter is how John Green conveys to the reader that you cannot judge someone without knowing who they really are or as the saying goes you can’t judge a book by its cover. This is not the only life lesson given throughout the book, Green is also able to teach the audience that you must follow what you believe in and pursue your dreams. He shows this through Quentin’s quest to find Margo, which caused him to not only travel up the whole East Coast but also to miss his high school graduation. Still, in the end Margo chooses to go her own way and leaves Quentin despite his hard work in finding her.
