John Haigh, also known as the Acid Bath Murderer, was born on July 24,1909. His parents were John Robert , an engineer and Emily Haigh. They were members of the Plymouth Brethren, which was a very conservative Protestant sector. Haigh claimed later on in his life that he suffered from recurrring religious nightmares throughout his childhood. Haigh was very interested and loved the piano. He taught himself to play and was very good at it. Growing up he enjoyed going to concerts of his favorite piano music. Haigh grew up in Stamford, Lincolnshire, England. While at Wakefield cathedral he became a choirboy. After Haigh finished school he jumped from job to job. He worked in an engineer firm, insurance firm and advertising. When he was 21, he was fired because they suspected him of stealing from the cash box. Haigh was married at the age of 23 on July 6,1934 to Beatrice Hamer. Beatrice was 23,at the time. After what seemed to be a happy first year, this started to turn bad for the newly married couple. Haigh was found guilty of fraud and sent to prison. While in prison, Beatrice gave birth to their daughter, whom she gave up for adoption and left Haigh. Being so conservative, his parents were outraged by this and disowned him from that point on. Haigh moved to london in 1936. Once in London Haigh found work as a chauffer to William McSwan. McSwan was a wealthy amusement arcade owner. Haigh started to maintain McSwans amusement machines.
