Counselors use Career Theories to assist clients in career exploration and development. John Holland’s Theory of Modal Personal Styles and Occupational Environments is one of the most widely used resources for career development. Holland felt that “individuals are attracted to particular roles of the occupational environment that meets their personal needs and provides them with satisfaction” (Zunker, 2016. p. 27). Holland felt that self-knowledge of oneself and occupational knowledge to be extremely important to develop a satisfying career. They are the Vocational Preference Inventory, My Vocational Situation, The Position Classification Inventory, and the Self-Directed Search. The Self-Directed Search which was created by Holland is a paper-pencil assessment that takes approximately 25 to 35 minutes to administer. The assessment uses Holland’s RIASEC theory to classify according to the six basic types. The test ask questions regarding aspirations, activities, competencies, and level of interest in a variety of occupations, which produces a three letter, code which matches there personality type to educational and occupational matches. The assessment ask individuals to rate their likes or dislikes of certain activities and occupations along with their competencies. The results will produce a three letter codes which than be compared to careers in the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) to research careers. IIP RIASEC Markers is a newer assessment that was developed for psychological research in 2008 specifically to research Holland’s RIASEC. The nice aspect of the IIP RIASEC Markers is that it is computer generated, it is free, and it is easy to assess. The individual is asked 48 questions regarding how much they would enjoying a task. James has recently been released from jail and is serving two years of probation for battery, possession of THC with intent. James has graduated high school however; he has held menial jobs only for short periods. James is frustrated that his probation officer has set up the appointment feeling that he can find a job by himself and really is not interested in talking with me. I start working with James talking about what he likes to do and what interests he might have. Working with James, he is reluctant, however, when he is talking about his hobbies he talks freely. I am developing a relationship with James that allows him to become comfortable. I asked James if he could do any job, what he would think that would be. James discloses that he would own his own auto shop. He loves working on cars. I suggest to James that I would like to complete a quick assessment to see what immediate jobs would maybe fit his interest. I asked if he would be willing to complete the IIP RIASEC test on the computer that it only takes about 5 minutes and it just asked him about things he might like to do. James agrees since it is fast. I provide James a computer and a private space to complete the assessment. When James is done, I am able to review the assessment with James showing him some of the careers in the top three codes. James is excited to learn me.
