John Legend is mainly known as a singer and an artist, but he’s also a social advocate who strives to create a better world! In Hello Magazine, the author makes a strong statement as follows, “His campaign works to end the school-to-prison pipeline and to handle systematic issues in our criminal justice system that immensely impacts the poor, minorities and underprivileged individual” (Moore). Legend is making an effort to change the criminal justice system because it affects people who may be innocent. The criminal justice system arrests and unjustly charges innocent people for their economic status or the poor. Legend is trying to give a fair chance to those who don’t have one, and gives help to those who can’t defend themselves. John Legend also makes a statement that states, “I think a politics of love means you believe in justice, you believe in equity, you believe in doing what we can to invest in solutions that will actually improve people’s lives” (Pizzello). Legend is demonstrating to stand for what you believe in and make an effort for change and equality. He wants people to be passionate and to truly strive for the cause of helping those in need and creating worldwide equality. Legend is sending the message to his listeners to do what you can to improve people’s lives and have justice. In Hello Magazine, it illustrates that, “The Show Me Campaign works to elevate and celebrate teachers, the single most important factor for student achievement in our schools… John has revealed that he takes inspiration from Martin Luther King Jr. in order to provide children with the education they need that can break the cycle of poverty and help them realize their full potential.” He is expressing the importance of helping those who aren’t as fortunate and can’t access the same education due to their economic status. He is giving children a chance with this campaign to reach their best future possible with a quality education. It’s crucial to put an end to this series of injustice and give everyone an equal education. In The Guardian, John Legend says the following “Every person you lock up has a bunch of family members that feels the effects of that. When you separate a child from their parent, you're extending the cycle of violence and trauma to that child, creating more potential for them to get in trouble in the future” (Levin). Legend has it that locking up innocent parents can cause children to go down the wrong path later on in life without a parental figure protecting them growing up.
