Locke distinguishes the difference between ideas and qualities as ideas being what is in the head and qualities as what is in the world. There are two types of ideas, simple ideas and complex ideas which are built out of simple ideas. Locke also states there are two types of qualities, primary qualities mirrors the object as they appear in our mind. They do not change and cannot be absent even in the smallest part of the object. A basketball is an example of a primary quality, it is round and any other shape would make it difficult to play with, bounce and even to shoot baskets. Secondary qualities are not really in the object as they appear in our mind. They are however the power to produce ideas in us. The texture of the basketball is different …show more content…
Locke argues to experience the qualities, not the object also known as substance. He states, “I cannot help but think there is something that ties all of these things (qualities) together. But I have never experienced the flower itself, so I have no knowledge of it.” Locke describes the origin of our idea of substance as a reflection on its own operations, taking notice. Also a certain number of simple ideas go together. We accustom ourselves to suppose some substratum where the do subsist result equaling substance. In general substance being nothing but the supposed, the unknown support those qualities we find existing which we cannot support. If I am understanding what Locke is saying about substance he is telling us that instead of substance being a flower rather it is the scent that is the substance, the flower is the object that goes together with the substance or in this case scent. Berkeley denies the existence of material substance, he states that it is ridiculous and is nothing more than a combination of very particular ideas put together. He goes on to say that even if there was a material world outside of a thinking mind we could never know it. You would have to be aware of this said material world either through sense or by reason. Senses only tell us what we are sensing not what is causing the sense, and reason only works through logical connections of concepts and no one claims that material object are logically connected to our ideas they are simply connected to our
