The European Enlightenment came from two simultaneous revolts from two different sides of the English Channel – France and England. The revolts resulted in many intellectual, educational and political advances. “Rather, enlightened read books and journals and frequented the coffeehouses, salons, Masonic lodges, and reading clubs that sprang up all over Europe and in the European colonies.” The age of Enlightenment is seen as a time period where people were able to invest time in more than just a job and family. The people who were leading this revolution are stereotyped as aristocrats. One of the main leaders of the revolution is John Locke. His ideals did not only influence the people during the revolution, but the billions of people afterward who now have more ability to question the relative normality. The student strives for excellence in and out of the classroom, for understanding and questioning of current and historical events, and the students strives to find one’s passion and one’s self. Park gives students the flexibility to do these things. Such things were also encouraged and fought for during the Enlightenment period. “I need not think, if only I can pay: others will readily undertake the irksome work for me” In this quote, Immanuel Kant is leaving the reader with a question of one’s free will and choice.
